Designing splashbacks continued

Published: 27 Jan, 2019

When I’m considering images for designing splashbacks, size is important.

Continuing on from the last post I’m still designing splashbacks with the falcon image. If you remember the photos of the Falcon I got last week, you’ll remember I said the file was quite small, because I had to crop the image. If I try to enlarge an image from a small file, the quality gets less.

The photo below is an example of what I mean.

Falcon cut out and enlarged

This is the Falcon enlarged over 400%. If you look at her beak, and around her eyes that funny pattern is what you get when you enlarge to the extreme. All is not lost however. It was like this over the whole images but I have begun to paint over the image. The result will be more like a painting but won’t have the distracting artifacts

I can then enlarge an image much more than I would be able to normally; and use the image in a splashback design

This is the result. This image is 1.4m long and 750mm high. The falcon has been painted to get rid of the artifacts in the enlarged image. I can now try this out in the sample kitchen images I have, to see what it looks like.

I’m not crazy about this as the colour is all wrong

This one is better, I’ve adjusted the image colours to be more in keeping with the kitchen. I’m still not sure I’d want our Falcon keeping a close eye on me while I’m cooking; maybe she’d look better as a piece of wall art?

It is certainly a possibility. I won’t throw this design away just yet.
