Solar Storm creates amazing Aurora display
The forecast Aurora last night certainly didn’t disappoint. Facebook this morning is full of images, some as far away as Northland! The camera of course can see Aurora far better than the human eye can, but this event could easily be seen with the naked eye
We saw all kinds of different Aurora on display last night, from rays and flares, Arc’s and bands, in all kinds of colours. The colours are caused by different molecules in the atmosphere. Oxygen molecules typically emit green and red light, while nitrogen molecules contribute to the blue and purple hues. We even saw an Aurora corona (last photo) where the rays meet overhead.
There were a few people around earlier in the night, especially by the Glenorchy Wharf, but the Aurora itself was so bright that it didn’t effect the images.
Light Rays above, and Corona below.
If you want to keep up to date with information about the possibility of another aurora event then this facebook group is very useful.
Some of the images I captured last night are big enough for wall art or smaller splashbacks so don’t hesitate to contact us
